The state of the power engineering of the Soviet Union was in in the second half of the 20th century characterized by the following features: (ⅰ) highly advanced industry that oriented mainly toward defense purposes, somewhat oversized, but well organized along the chain "research institutes-experimental design offices-manufacturing plants"; (ⅱ) advanced fundamental science, which promptly handed over study results to applied research institutes and experimental design offices for implementation of new ideas; and (ⅲ) a good system of secondary and higher education, especially in terms of training scientists, engineers, and physicians.
