A new concept for an in-vessel corium melt catcher is proposed, in which the functions of a catcher are performed by the lower part of a lengthened reactor vessel partially filled with sacrificial material. The proposed concept incorporates the scientific and engineering experience gained in the course of developing the ex-vessel catcher for the VVER-1000 reactor of the Tyanvan nuclear power station (NPS).
