Problems related to the wear of the main production facilities in electric power engineering, which amount to 54%, are discussed. This situation calls for a renewal of the equipment. At the same time, the equipment is not renewed due to the lack of investment. Analysis shows that the service life of part of the equipment can be extended. However, the cost of such extension is fairly high: in 2000 it amounted to 32.7 billion rubles, or 12% of the net cost of electricity production. The costs incurred by the excessive consumption of fuel due to the use of obsolete technologies for its combustion are even greater. Another possible option for extending the service life of a thermal power station is to replace its equipment with similar equipment. This approach, however, does not enable performance characteristics corresponding to present-day requirements to be achieved.
