A Norma Bucko, Threads' seamstress and an expert embroiderer, replies: I avoid using knots. They can cause lumps on the front of your work when it is stretched and framed. Knots also can come undone. My favorite method for starting a new thread is to use an away waste knot. Knot the thread end. Insert the needle from the right side about 5 inches from the start point. Bring it to the right side again at the stitching start point, and begin embroidering. When you have finished that section, bring the thread to the wrong side and weave it under the stitches for 1 inch to 2 inches before cutting it. Return to where you started the stitching, snip off the knot, thread the end into the needle and weave it under the stitches for 1 inch to 2 inches. Trim the excess close to the stitching.
