Rebecca Fulgoni of Kalamazoo, Michigan, has always enjoyed sewing garments. Knitting is a fairly recent interest. She learned the basics as a child but didn't knit garments until a few years ago. Rebecca likes the challenge of translating sewing patterns into knitted creations. She never learned to follow a knitting pattern, and because she is tall, she says she would have to make a lot of adjustments. She says it made sense to start from scratch and plan her own patterns. To begin a project, she knits a swatch and, based on the gauge, plans a knitted version of a sewing pattern. On this hand-knit cardigan, based on a hand-drafted pattern, Rebecca stabilized the front and neckline edges with petersham ribbon. The buttonholes are in the right-front ribbon facing, while the buttons are threaded onto a narrow ribbon. This ribbon is hand-stitched with contrast thread to the wider left-front ribbon trim.
