Sewer vs. sewist According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the first known use of the word sewer to mean "one that sews" occurred in the 14th century. Over time, various words have evolved to describe those who sew garments and other items, as well as distinct terms for professionals in the garment industry. Sewer remains the dominant term among hobbyists, but sewist (combining "sew" with "artist") appears to be gaining popularity, especially in the blogosphere and other Web sewing communities. Luckily, there's room for all of us, whether we identify as "sewers" or as "sewists."
