I first started experimenting with silk-faced brocades from mainland China about 10 years ago, and as I've continued to work with them, I'm more and more impressed. This elegant, luminous, and seductively supple fabric has many wonderful qualities, and few poor ones, and it's in no way limited to Asian-inspired garments, as you can see in the examples shown above. In fact, I feel the sky is the limit; silk-faced brocade can add a fascinating touch to dressy day- and eveningwear, casual clothing, and even business attire; I've listed my favorite garment choices for brocade in "Fitted garments are the best choice" on p. 38. Let's examine the charac- teristics of the fabric itself, and explore some appropriate patterns, details, and techniques for using this exotic material that deserves to be more familiar to all sewers.
