If you were watching the Great North Run on television recently, you saw a mass of athletes being funnelled into the starting area and crossing the start line. At first glance, it seemed unfair that some runners were just starting when others were already a guarter of a mile down the track. In fact, all the runners get an equal chance as their individual times are recorded as they cross the start and finish lines.
