It's common knowledge that manual handling accounts for the lion's share of work-related injuries. So, why is UK plc still allowing 300,000 employees every year to endure the agony of back pain, asks Hugh Freer, UK sales & marketing manager of MasterMover International Ltd.rnLogic suggests that the blame for this lies with both employees and employers. It's impossible for a business to ensure safe manual handling practices all of the time. There will always be the foolhardy employee who attempts to lift too much or pull a trolley that's laden with excessive weight. However, the burden of guilt lies all too often with the employer.rnThere are, of course, many companies that pride themselves on developing and maintaining safe systems and working practices. These are the companies that readily invest in new equipment or training in order to minimise the risk of injury to their staff. However, there are many companies who appear willing to accept manual handling injuries as an occupational hazard.
