It's hardly a surprise that Democrats are using Social Security scare tactics to gain ground before the November elections. What is surprising is that President Barack Obama is not only tolerating this classic, old-politics maneuver by his party-he is leading the charge.rnThe tactic has worked well for Democrats in the past, as older voters, who typically turn out in higher percentages than younger voters do in midterm contests, tend to trust Democrats more than Republicans to protect the retirement program. The weak economy, Obama's mushy poll numbers and a lack of traction on their legislative achievements has left Democrats with little in the way of a positive message. And with some prominent Republicans calling for the creation of privately managed retirement accounts, the GOP has opened itself up to political attack.
