Objective To investigate whether parental smoking wasrnassociated with smoking-related play behaviour in youngrnchildren.rnDesign Children were asked to pretend that they wererngrown-ups having dinner. They were invited to act outrnthis situation in a play corner with a toy kitchen andrna child-sized dining area, including a package of fakerncigarettes on the table.rnSetting Children were tested individually at their schoolrnduring regular school hours.rnParticipants The sample consisted of 100 childrenrnbetween 4 and 8 years of age (mean=5.28, SD=0.94)rnof which 57% were boys. The majority of the childrenrnwere born in The Netherlands (99%).rnMeasurements The main outcome measure wasrnwhether or not a child pretended to be smokingrna cigarette. Child and parent reports were used tornassess parental smoking.rnFindings Findings revealed that 37% of the children hadrnat least one 'puff' during their play. Children were morernlikely to pretend to smoke if they reported havingrnsmoking parents (OR=3.16, p=0.02; 95% Cl=1.22 torn8.18). Analyses for the model with parent reports onrnparental smoking did not yield any direct association.rnChildren's explicit attitudes were unrelated to theirrnsmoking-related play behaviour.rnConclusions These findings indicate that young children,rnwho reported having parents who smoke, alreadyrnassociate having dinner with a (after-dinner) cigarette.
