It's been recently reported in Tobacco International (September 2013) that Russia is proving to be a strong market for American cigars. What is ironic is that many Russian shoppers prefer medium-sized U.S. cigars in attractive packages over the more expensive quality cigars from Cuba. Additional data has been processed and provides a new insight and confirmation of the trend. U.S. exports of cigars to Russia advanced 42 percent in the first ten months of 2013 over the comparable period in 2012 to reach US $10.2M in sales. Indications of the trend in popularity for the American cigars abound. Russia has now moved ahead of Canada to become the leading destination for U.S. cigars as of early 2013. As reported earlier, Russian truck drivers continue the sideline of buying cigars and other items at stores in Finland and selling certain items at a higher price back home.
