The Chinese-owned Xinhua News Agency reported exclusively from Havana on August 28 that Cuban Vice President Jose Ramon Machado. had visited the Pinar del Rio Province, where he called on his country's tobacco farmers to boost production by as much as 70 percent. News from Cuba, especially of this nature, is difficult to come by, but a call to boost production so dramatically was bound to draw media attention. And the size of the mandated production increase, together with the popularity of Cuban tobacco makes this a compelling tobacco story on any number of levels.
