Poland's cigarette exports to other European Union members moved up to a peak of about 64.6 billion pieces in 2011 and remained near that level in 2012. Poland had rapid gains for cigarette exports after entering the EU in 2004. Removal of the tariff wall of 58.6 percent for shipments to the earlier 15 members of the EU provided a great opportunity for Poland's cigarette exports. A problem emerged as Poland gained market share in major import markets at the expense of major traditional exporters - Germany and Netherlands.
