摘要

The bad news for the world leaf industry is that the hard economic times have already affected demand... and that effect is not likely to stop anytime soon.rn"I don't expect world leaf production to increase for at least another 12 months," says Jim Starkey of Richmond, Virginia. "Perhaps then economic conditions will improve. But there is not likely to be much recovery in demand until the world starts pulling out of the recession. Until then, we could see some further downward adjustment in production in much of the world."rnStarkey, who is a retired leaf company executive, says, "In the past year, we have gone from a fairly balanced leaf supply to slight surplus. In the case of filler style burley, we now have a significant surplus, largely because of excess production in Malawi."
