Philip Morris USA ended off the year on a high note, after winning the reversal of a $10 bn damage award to smokers of "light" cigarettes who claimed it misled them about health risks. The Springfield, Illinois-based court reversed a decision by a lower court judge who said Philip Morris, a unit of Altria Group Inc., "intended to deceive consumers" into believing its MARLBORO LIGHTS and CAMBRIDGE LIGHTS were safer than regular brands. The high court found state law didn't permit the suit because the Federal Trade Commission authorized cigarette makers to characterize their products as "light" or "low-tar."
