A 4% decrease in production in 2005 of hurley tobacco, the only type still grown in significant quantities in Guatemala, was projected by a local leaf dealer. The dealer estimated a volume of 12,189 green mts, 4% less than in 2004 (a season of above average yields thanks mainly to favorable weather) and slightly less than what was expected when targets were first drawn up. There has been a little less interest in committing to tobacco among Guatemalan farmers this season due to tax and other advantages for growing other crops.
