Imperial Tobacco's highlight of the past year was the acquisition of Reemtsma, finalized in May 2002, promoting Imperial into the top tier of tobacco companies as the fourth largest international tobacco company in the world. This major acquisition greatly strengthened Imperial's strategy to create sustainable shareholder value by growing its international operations. The Group manufactures and markets a complete range of tobacco and tobacco-related products, from cigarettes, pipe tobacco and cigars to rolling papers and snuff, while also having major interests in vending machines. As part of the integration, major organizational changes were announced last September, triggering a consultation process with Unions and Works Councils. These changes are resulting in the loss of around 800 jobs worldwide out of the enlarged Imperial Tobacco Group total of 18,000 employees.
