Cellulose acetate is the most common material used for cigarette filters all over the world. At present, more than 95% of the filter cigarettes produced worldwide are equipped with cellulose acetate filters. However, for a large number of cigarette brands in the Chinese market, polypropylene is used as the filter material. This study was undertaken in order to determine the differences in filtration capabilities between polypropylene and cellulose acetate. Comparable cigarettes, with filters made from cellulose acetate and polypropylene respectively, and with the same physical parameters, were prepared and tested for different components in mainstream smoke. In addition to tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide, other selected compounds of tobacco smoke were determined to provide a picture of the different filtration behavior between cellulose acetate and polypropylene.
