Research and development is at the heart of Surface Spe-cialties, being fundamental to all companies in the UCB group. One of its aims is to expand its global market share of film overwrap for the tobacco industry. Backing the Group's annual R&D investment, costing 5% of turnover, a new Euro 12m Research and Development Center opened last August at Wigton, Cumbria, UK, alongside the company's BOPP and cellulose film production site. Surface Specialties UCB (formerly UCB Films) is part of the Belgium-based UCB Group which also has worldwide interests in Pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The group employs over 10,000 people and has a turnover of Euros 2,475m. Sixteen per cent of that turnover relates to the film sector.
