Altadis is the third-largest ciga-rette company in Western Europe, a worldwide leader in cigars and also operates a logistics/distribution business. The maker of GAULOISES, GITANES, DUCADOS and FORTUNA cigarettes and Consolidated Cigars, has most things moving in the right direction as a company-wide restructuring begins bearing fruit based on the strength of new distribution and financial deals, as well as a combination of talent and expertise. Sales grew a healthy 3.5%, net income by 8.0% and earnings per share by 10.8% during the first half of 2003. Its cigarette division reached 879 mn euros, posting growth of 8.2%. Cigar sales, which account for 22% of its business, went up by approximately 11.5%, not accounting for the dollar-exchange-rate impact. Around 80% of Altadis' cigar sales are "dollar denominated" as it controls non-Cuban trademarks for such brands as ROMEO Y JULIETA, MONTECRISTO and H. UPMANN, as well as many mass-market cigars such as TE-AMO, HAV-A-TAMPA and HENRY CLAY. Most are made in Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
