Looking back on an academic career in mathematics at the University of L'Aquila (Italy) of over forty years, Eraldo Giuli turned seventy on March 12, 2010. While instrumental in building a strong department at this university he became one of the best-known categorical topologists, and his work reaches far beyond his "home territory" of general topology. In fact, his research articles demonstrate a broad mathematical interest and feature an extensive network of international collaboration. He is most strongly recognized for his seminal work on categorical closure operators with Dikran Dikranjan, and on completions, pursued in part with Horst Herrlich and Guillaume Brummer.
