Satellite operators are getting an unprecedented chance to bid for pan-European frequency in the 'S' band this month to offer mobile satellite services. The EC hopes that satellite operators' customers will use the spectrum, which neighbours that of UMTS, to offer emergency services, serve rural areas, and spur competition in the mobile TV market. Potentially, this could upset mobile operators' business plans for future multimedia services.
