摘要

Europe's regulators are coming round to the idea that operators' success in a multimedia world will hinge on access to premium content. But that does not mean service providers can afford to spend large amounts to acquire it. When typically they are only securing ARPU of E∪D5 directly from their IPTV services, according to some analysts, it's clear why most operators are being cautious. Paying top dollar for content is a risky strategy, particularly in the early days of IPTV deployment. Tele2 acquired exclusive soccer rights in the Netherlands in 2006, but last year ended up reselling them to incumbent KPN. "Tele2 spent E∪D92 million on soccer rights, but with its 80,000 subscribers it could not make the business stack up," says Richard Broughton, an analyst at Screen Digest.
