Radio frequency identification and machine-to-machine technologies have played at the fringes of the systems in- tegration and telecoms businesses for the last few years. Some enterprises have been mailing early technologies and services, but most are waiting for them to become cheap and mature enough to deploy in earnest. This won't be the year that component prices tumble and companies start ramping up RFID and M2M spending. But if analysts at Regan, Jacob and Sydney are right, 2006 will be the year that big software companies such as Oracle and SAP, as well as large systems integrators, finally stake their claim to the market by acquiring specialist companies. They will need to. The report points out that few large integrators that want to take on RFID projects have staff qualified to implement them.
