Deploying fibre access networks for broadband services is a costly business. The process of deciding which fibre technology to use—point to point; active star; passive star—can also be tricky for operators wanting to move to new services such as broadcast television. If, for example, an incumbent decides to deploy fibre to the kerb over existing copper for very high-speed DSL, the active equipment on the kerb side can be backhauled by point-to-point, active star or passive optical networks to the fibre aggregation point. Eventually, all connections go from one point to another, but in this context point to point expresses a direct fibre connection from the destination to the fibre aggregation point. This physical structure is straightforward, and there is no concentration of cabling 'down the road', hence there are no active components in the field.
