In an era when virtually all development proposals cause controversy, mobile phone masts seem to generate particular ire. Three Private Members Bills were laid before Parliament in 2004 calling for tighter controls over mobile phone mast development, strongly backed by the Local Government Association, national pressure groups such as Mast Action, and individual local authorities. A further Bill was introduced by David Curry MP in March 2006 with the aim of increasing controls on mast development. While all failed to become law, mobile phone mast development continues to be a highly contentious subject.
