Since December l997 sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, total suspended particles are measured at Dongying urban area with an Air Quality Auto Monitoring System (AQAMS). Monthly average concentrations of SO_2 ranged (rom 0.0l2 to 0. l37 mg/m~3, NO~x from 0.006 to 0.076 mg/m~3, and TSP from 0. l21 to 0.306 mg/m~3. Exceeding of Chinese National Air Quality Standard levels for sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides occurred mainly during the heating period. Violations for total suspended solids occurred frequently throughout the whole year due to Dongying's geo- graphic situation and nature of soil. In 1998 one indoor air dust sample (spring) and one air outdoor dust sample (autumn) were analysed for l6 EPA PAHs using HPLC/DAD. The concentration of benzo(a)pyrene was 0.7l mg/kg dust for the indoor sample and 2.2l mg/kg dust for the outdoor sample. S ixteen PAH EPA amounted to 56.4 mg/kg dust for the indoor sample and l67.5 mg/kg dust for the outdoor sample. Both samples showed a considerable percentage of naphthalene and acenaphthylene, the source of these compounds is not yet identified. The PAH profile suggests that coal firing plays an important role, followed by traffic as air pollution source. Compared to other Chinese cities air pollution in Dongying must be considered low to moderate.
