Cybersecurity of Freight Information Systems A Scoping Study

摘要

The merger of electronic information sys-terns with transportation infrastructure is transforming the freight industry. Although expected to increase private and public benefits, the new and more fully integrated freight information systems may be vulnerable to cyberattack. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) therefore requested the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies to review trends in the use of information technology in the freight transportation industry and to assess the vulnerabilities to cyberattacks. NRC formed the Committee on Freight Transportation Information Systems Security (see box, page 35), under the Transportation Research Board and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board. The committee's charge was to recommend the scope for a study that would 1. Describe the communication and information systems in U.S. freight transportation; 2. Summarize ongoing and emerging information-and communication-based processes and technology improvements affecting transportation, shipping, and logistics; 3. Review industry practices that address security; and 4. Identify and summarize potential vulnerabilities in the interconnection, interface, and integration of new transportation information systems.
