摘要

Vehicle emissions contribute significantly to global warming and air pollution is harming people's health. That, sadly, is still a fact. The engineering of cities, particularly traffic signals, can affect the quantity of emissions emitted. It is often assumed within the traffic industry that reducing queuing and journey time is the best way to achieve this. This paper puts forward an alternative idea suggesting if emissions are the priority then focusing on reducing the most wasteful stages of driving; stops and starts should be top of the list. Potentially 'Green waves' can reduce waiting times of cars at side roads and at pedestrian crossings and improve the quality of life in urban areas.
