SOME MAY THINK it takes a mountain to bring out the best in a steam locomotive. However, there's something to be said for seeing them cut loose across a wide, flat plain. It was the size of the earth, not gravity that railroads were created to overcome. Prior to railroads, people struggled with distance with the same futility as death and disease. All of the roads leading into Abilene, Kan., give forewarning that the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad is a prime location to appreciate steam working in this subtle, planar context. The town is moated on all sides by flat, windswept farmlands. Their bounty makes gainful work for the modern freight railroads running through the area: BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad have main lines through Abilene, each with spurs feathering off to the grain elevators that form central Kansas' most abundant topography.
