Friday, April 10, 2040, at 5:40 a.m. Terminal Island, Calif. Patrick Anderson climbs out of the white crew van and stretches his arms wide above his head, making a Y shape as he yawns. Grabbing his grip and lunch, he wanders over to the locomotive that is his, according to BNSF Railway's crew smart-phone app. It's BNSF No. 4326, a Siemens AmericaRunner E442. Anderson climbs aboard the unit through the front platform nose door, puts his phone into airplane mode as per regulations, and places his thumb on the fingerprint scanner next to the locomotive desk. The warm yellow cab LEDs come on, and the two screens light up, flooding the cab with orange light. They are still on night mode, which cuts out blue light. and will be until sunrise.
