In the risk-informed, performance-based approach under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 805 standard [1], Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessment (Fire PRA) is used to evaluate plant-specific fire-related risk and vulnerability. State-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and data for the current Fire PRA of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) are documented in NUREG/CR-6850 [2]. A main gap in this current Fire PRA methodology is the overestimation of risk due to the use of excessively conservative input parameters and assumptions [3]. Ensuring that Fire PRA is as realistic as possible allows proper fire-safety related decisions and better comparisons to be made between fire and other hazards with regard to their contributions to the overall plant risk. Fire risk is a considerable burden of concern to the nuclear utilities, contributing to between 35% to 98% of total plant Core Damage Frequency (CDF) [4].
