Analysis of BORAL~® Coupons from Zion Spent Fuel Pool

In this paper, the coupon analyses results for the coupons removed from the Zion SFP are presented. Overall, the coupons were in excellent condition. Out of the 10 coupons, only one of them showed a very small blister when initially removed from the Zion SFP. During the drying process, several coupons developed blisters; however, the drying process is not a representation of the SFP environment. Coupons also showed pits with varying depth and thickness. The dimension measurements did not show any statistically significant change. Neutron absorber materials are used in SFP to maintain criticality safety margins and areal density is the most important factor to ensure these margins are maintained. The areal density values, after residing in the Zion pool over 21 years are in excellent agreement with the pre-irradiation, as-manufactured values. The project is ongoing and the anticipated timeline for panel removal is September 2015. The panel results should shed more light on long term performance of BORAL~® as neutron absorber material in SFPs.
