In safeguarding the spent fuel from the BN-350 facility, the transition from wet storage to dry storage requires the introduction of unattended monitoring instrumentation on each storage cask. The instrumentation that is the foundation for these unattended safeguards was developed by the Safeguards Science & Technology group at Los Alamos National Laboratory and is referred to as the MicroGRAND. The purpose of the MicroGRAND is to autonomously record radiation and environmental data that will allow an IAEA inspector to verify that the nuclear material within each cask has not been diverted between inspections.
