摘要

This, the latest volume of the second series of the Buildings of England, completes the revision/ replacement of the original Pevsner and Nairn Sussex (Harmondsworth, Penguin, 1965). Sussex: East appeared in 2013 (reviewed in Vol 58 (2014), 193-95). The authorship of these volumes is a little tangled; readers will observe that Sir Nikolaus' name does not appear on the (already lengthy) list of authors of West, though he is, of course, credited on the flyleaf as Founding Editor. The roots of this go back to the 1965 book, originally to be written by Nairn, as two-thirds of Surrey had been. However, as Pevsner put it in its Preface: 'when he had completed West Sussex, he could no longer bear to write the detailed descriptions… I had of course to carry on… the volume called for two introductions… Because neither could Mr.Nairn introduce what I travelled and docketed nor could I introduce a part of the county which I had studied only in the selected 50 or 60 items and places… they included, of course, Chichester Cathedral… I also wrote most of the account of Crawley.'.
