Style is a slippery business. One of the best architects covered in this book, Sir Giles Scott, is quoted as saying style does not much matter: 'it is an interesting subject, but from an aesthetic point of view it has little or no significance.' Unpacked, what that seems to say is that a good architect can build well in any style, but the choice of style lies beyond the realm of aesthetics. If we want to understand why someone has opted to eat Chinese or Italian, it is not much help just to scrutinize what is piled on their plate.
