(ⅰ) 'Britain's Lost Churches: the Forgotten Holy Sites of Britain's Christian Past' by Matthew Hyde published by Aurum, £20. The late Matthew Hyde here presents an eclectic mix of churches demolished, ruined and abandoned, blitzed, moved and converted. The latter is represented in particular by the spectacular Providence Chapel at Cleckheaton in Yorkshire, closed in 1991 but since 2002 functioning as "the largest Indian restaurant in the world", with a license to seat 850 diners. Henry VIII, Hitler and the decline in formal religion are all well rehearsed reasons for nemesis. This church of SS James and John at Derwent in Derbyshire came down except for the tower and spire in 1935 to make way for the Ladybower reservoir. The tower and spire hung on until December 1947 when managers citing health and safety dynamited it. As Matthew Hyde says this was a considerable shame for "the steeple was an amazing site poking out of the rising waters, like the tower of Orthanc at the end of 'The Lord of the Rings'".
