The static and dynamic aerodynamics of an advanced UAV with stealth configuration (X-45A) were investigated by flow visualization and force measurements in a water tunnel. The results show that under static conditions, the forebody vortices separate into primary/secondary vortices due to the flattened design. As a increases, the primary vortices disappear gradually and the secondary vortices appear obviously. Aerodynamics force data also show that the X-45A exhibits longitudinally stable behavior (Cm < 0) for Cn = 0-1.5. As Cn continues to increase, nose pitch-up moment is generated by vortex breakdown moving upstream on the wing surface, rotating the aircraft further from its equilibrium state.
