摘要

Councillors Roger Blakeley, Daran Ponter and Sue Kedgley from Greater Wellington Regional Council made a recent self-funded trip to Canberra to look at its light rail experience. They were joined by Wellington City Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman. This article is an expression of their personal views. As the debate about whether light rail would be a sensible option for Wellington continues, a delegation of Wellington Regional and City Councillors visited Canberra, to investigate why the Australian capital city, like other Australian cities, has opted for light rail rather than bus rapid transit or building more roads. When the ACT Government first announced its intention to investigate light rail for Canberra, the proposal was met with strong public scepticism and opposition. We wanted to learn how they got light rail 'over the line'.
