It was with great excitement that I caught the train to Newcastle Interchange from my local station at Cardiff, on 15 October, the opening day. For nearly three years the city has been inconvenienced by the lack of a proper rail terminus since Newcastle Station closed at the end of 2014. The Interchange has a free flowing and attractive concourse, whilst it is surprising how three platforms fit into a fairly compact space. One can now look forward to the opening of the light rail line in less than two years, for it is now well and truly under construction. Travellers towards the east end are inconvenienced on a daily basis by the closure of Hunter Street, but the short term pain should lead to long term gain. I grew up in Newcastle and saw the slow decline of the inner city. Previous Governments did nothing to stop the spread of the decay, apart from a few luxury apartment developments along the waterfront which continued to be segregated from the rest of the city by other buildings and the rail corridor. It is good to now see some investment resulting in the city coming alive again to complement the harbour and beaches.
