There had been 'leaks' in the media for about two weeks when the Victorian Government made a major announcement on 7 February regarding the replacement of nine level crossings on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines and the creation of public open space. This is a $1.6b project to remove every level crossing between Caulfield and Dandenong. The project includes five new stations to replace the current stations at Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Hughesdale, Clayton and Noble Park, and upgraded signalling and power along the corridor. The design centres on three sections of elevated railway, which will create 225,000m2 of community open space for parks, playgrounds, sporting facilities, car parking and a range of other uses to be chosen by local residents. The Government claimed that the majority of the work could be completed without interruption to services. Thirty platforms along the Cranbourne Pakenham line will be lengthened for the 37 high-capacity metropolitan trains.
