The UK-based divisional boss of one of Europe's biggest logistics groups has added his voice to calls for a uniform standard by which the environmental performance of road transport operations can be measured and compared fairly. Speaking in London last month following publication of Kuehne and Nagel's 2007 financial results, Peter Ulber, chief executive of the Swiss group's northwest Europe division said: "There is a public relations aspect to this whole issue (environmental matters) and we are staying out of it. The trouble is there is no agreed international standard on carbon footprint calculation." Mr Ulber's comments echo those of Hubbard Products managing director Pat Maughan (page 38), who talks of a growing number of customers complaining of having been misled by "manufacturers of transport refrigeration equipment who have made claims based on data that is at best irrelevant to the UK market and at worst unquantifiable."
