Exactly why does the UK market for vans and light chassis-cabs keep on growing strongly year after year? And when, if ever, will this growth finally peter out? Such questions cause much head-scratching among even the most seasoned observers of the commercial vehicles business, including Ian Jones, managing director of the commercial vehicles division of Mercedes-Benz UK. His company is riding on the crest of the LCV wave at presetit with record sales of Sprinter and Vito resulting in a 27.8 per cent growth for Mercedes in the 2.8-6.5 tonnes gvw sector of the UK market in 2007. But Mr Jones is candid enough to admit that even an organisation with the huge market-analysis resources of Daimler cannot fully explain what is going on more widely in UK lcv registrations. "We don't really understand why the van market has continued to grow for seven years," he says. "We think there is an underlying change in the way people distribute goods."
