The Society is responding to a government consultation on its proposals to move the date of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars forward as it aims to reduce harmful emissions of greenhouse gases. As a professional engineering institution, the Society is well positioned to formulate a response to the government's consultation proposal by offering technical advice and identifying factors that need to be addressed when considering a move to alternative fuels. Part of the Society's purpose is to promote sustainable standards for operations engineering, and to meet the needs of current operations without compromising future generations. We have identified the need for real net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions arising from the operation of equipment as integral to the government proposals.
