Automated control of rail-road level crossing gates using axle counters and microprocessors

Many accidents are taking at Rail-Road level crossing (LC) gates which are either manually controlled or unmanned on Indian Railways. The cost of manning the gates involves huge recurring expenditure besides installation cost. The paper describes present scenario of LC gates, working on Indian Railways. The uses of Track Circuits and Axle Counters with their working principles have been briefly discussed. A system for automated control of Rail-Road LC gates using Axle Counters (AC) and Microprocessor has been developed and presented here for which a program using 8085 microprocessor has been developed. The use of such a system is likely to reduce the number of accidents as well as recurring maintenance expenditures; and is aimed to facilitate safe as well as faster movement of trains. Standards of Indian Railways for Broad Gauge track has been referred to wherever required.
