In June 2009, we set out some proposals for the role of education in the future of the Institute. The intention of this article is to bring you up to date by summarising the Institute's current position on each of the concepts raised. A brief precis of each concept is included as a reminder. Success in a formal examination favours candidates with a good memory, and, where examinations centre on case studies, knowing how to phrase answers to maximise marks. Neither of these skills is relevant to running a transport operation. Significantly, the Institute's 'CPC equivalent' training will not require an end-of-course examination. Competence is assessed by the training provider throughout, and once the required level of competence is demonstrated - whether by a written piece, oral presentation, discussion of a topic or piece of work by another candidate - the instructor will 'sign off that subject.
