The air cargo business - and last year Heathrow Airport was the third largest port in the country in terms of value of goods handled - has decided that the 1970's will be the "Air Freight Decade". We spoke in the past about "the canal era", and then we had the "age of steam". Each improvement in any transport system has been the development of a new vehicle, usually with new means of propulsion, which increases speed and reduces distances in the terms of size. Today, unquestionably, we live in "The Jet Age". And as in all the forms of transport that have been known to man, it has been in the carriage of passengers that the new transport system has been principally occupied. But just as the carriage of goods has superseded the carriage of passengers in most transport forms, it is believed by many that the aeroplane, already dominating the passenger travel field, will come to carry a steadily increasing amount of non-bulk cargo.
