In recent years, Hong Kong's container port, with a throughput far exceeding that of all the UK's terminals combined, has competed with Singapore for the title of the world's busiest container port. This status reflects the fact that the 'fragrant harbour' is a dominant transportation and logistics hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, it is at the heart of three booming container trades, Asia-Europe, Asia-North America and intra-Asia. It serves these routes by means of nine terminals with 24 berths. The port has for many years been a key factor in the economic growth of Hong Kong, which has long acted as the prime entrepot for Southern China.
