The first trenchless installation with a fiberglass pipe that I can point to in the United States was a project for the City of Houston in 1986 and 1987 .The project was constructed using both direct bury and jacking installations. The purpose of the new line was to improve treatment efficiency by diverting a 10.2 MGD flow from the separate treatment facilities of four recently annexed Alief area MUDs to the City of Houston's Beltway Treatment Plant. The consulting engineer, Gerry E. Pate Consulting Engineers, considered corrosion resistance of upmost importance and specified only PVC lined concrete and fiberglass pipes. The general contractor Jalco Construction Co., of Houston, selected fiberglass pipes, imported from Europe, based on a lower installed cost despite a slightly higher purchase price. Jalco based the cost-savings on the fact that fiberglass was less expensive to handle and join because it is lightweight and available in 20-ft sections. The installer also noted that the smooth exterior of the fiberglass pipes reduces friction in the soil which reduces loads. The longest bore distance of 560 ft of 60-in. diameter was easily completed with loads of up to 150 tons. So much has changed since this first installation.
